Campervanning is all the rage these days, so why not join the fun?

Just picture it: You’re out on the open road in Texas, and boy, is there a lot of open road to explore in the state. If you feel like stopping somewhere, all you need to do is find the right campsite or parking spot since you’ve got all your belongings and even your bed right there in the back. That could be your reality with the right campervan.

Texas is definitely one of those states where having a car is essential for getting around, and the distances between top attractions across different cities can sometimes be massive (you know, like how going from Houston to Big Bend National Park will take you about 9 hours). Put two and two together and a campervan offers an ideal solution: Transportation? Check. Somewhere to sleep wherever and whenever you need a break? Check.

If you’re ready to hit the road from Houston, you can get your adventure going with one of these campervan rentals in and near the city. Buckle up, because it’s for sure going to be a memorable ride.

1. 2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Why you should rent: You can explore more with this comfortable van’s daily mileage allowance and included supplies.

  • Sleeps: 2
  • Minimum stay: 3 nights
  • Rates from: $210/night

This 2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is all packed and ready for fun. It’s simple and modern inside, and you’ll have essentials like linens, towels, and kitchenware along with handy things to have on the road like camping chairs and a water filter.

The van is two-wheel drive, but the owner made some modifications with the tires so you should be good to go regardless of the kind of surface you encounter. Another nice addition? There’s a boosting antenna in the van so you should get better signal in places than you normally would, which is particularly helpful if you find yourself out in the middle of nowhere needing to phone home.

Sorry party people, you’re not allowed to go to music festivals or tailgating with this one, but the bright side is that your pet is allowed to tag along. If you need some travel inspiration, you can check out where the van has been before on the @vincesvangoes Instagram profile. You get 200 miles free per day with this one so you shouldn’t have trouble getting to where you want to go.

2. Ulikevan – Ram Promaster 2500

Why you should rent: It’s convenient having a full bathroom and 200-mile allowance with this DIY van.

  • Sleeps: 2
  • Minimum stay: 2 nights
  • Rates from: $180/night

A converted Ram Promaster 2500, this Ulikevan is set up so that you have plenty of storage underneath your bed which you can easily access from the swing-open back doors. The two foldable bikes you can rent with the van would fit perfectly there. Come to the side of the van, slide the door open, and you’ll see two extra seats in case you’re driving with some extra passengers.

In terms of facilities, the van has a dry flush toilet, so there aren’t any messy liquids to deal with (or smelly odors leaking out). It also has its own bathroom so you conveniently shower within your own abode. Hopefully there are no emergencies you have to deal with when you’re traveling with this van, but if you’re the type who always likes to be prepared, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and survival shovel on board.

Since the van uses 20 AMP only, you should only plug in one AC device at a time. That means don’t blast the air conditioner while microwaving your lunch since that really wouldn’t be the safest thing to do.

Why you should rent: This big van offers a lot of the comforts of home, including TVs.

  • Sleeps: 2
  • Minimum stay: 1 night
  • Rates from: $275/night

Longer than some campervans you might be used to, this 2019 Coachmen RV Galleria 24Q isn’t the one for off-roading (seriously, it’s not allowed), but it is the van if you want to be surrounded by comfort as you travel. It’s equipped with lots of convenient appliances, including an A/C, microwave, stove, oven, and not one but two televisions. There’s also a toilet and shower inside for when you need to freshen up. Being able to cook and clean when you want while traveling around is a big convenience!

While the van is meant to sleep two, it has enough seats to fit eight people comfortably. It’s useful just in case you’re driving around to different spots with some friends during the day. Before you head off, make sure to find a dogsitter since no pets are allowed in this one. And as you’re driving, keep in mind that you have 100 miles per night included with the rental—more than that and you’ll have to pay an excess mileage cost.

Why you should rent: These vans have tech integration that makes it easier for navigating and playing your road trip playlist.

  • Sleeps: 2
  • Minimum stay: 1 night
  • Rates from: $379/night

Along with its 4×4, fleet, and executive vans, Luxed Vans has two campervans that are available for renting: the Winnebago ERA Camper Van R003 and the Winnebago ERA Camper Van R002. While their rental prices are the same and the layouts basically match, they have different color schemes inside so you’ll want to take a look at which one suits your fancy best.

Big picture: Both vans have high roofs and all-terrain tires, which means if you’re a tall, adventuring type you’re all set. The vans also have toll tags activated, so you don’t have to scramble to find change as you’re driving through the toll booths. Other nice features include a rearview camera for easier maneuvering, Apple Car Play and Android Auto for seamless integration with your phone, and roadside assistance through SOS so if (and only if) you run into some issues help is right there.

Need more? Check their add-ons menu for things like an ice chest, luggage carrier, and child car seats. While the rate is more expensive than the other options on this list, keep in mind you do get 250 miles per day of rental.

Why you should rent: You get 450 miles free per day with this family-friendly campervan.

  • Sleeps: 4
  • Minimum stay: 2 nights
  • Rates from: $160/night

Many campervans sleep two but this 2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris can handle four (two in the converted bed and two in the pop-up tent on top), making it a more spacious choice for a family. Pets are allowed too so it really can be a whole family affair! When you’ve parked somewhere, pull out the side awning and set up your hang-out spot underneath the shade. Ready to drive? You have a super-generous 450 miles per day that you can make use of. That should be more than enough to satisfy your daily wanderlust, but if you really do need more you can do it at an extra charge.

If you’re driving around during wintertime, you and your frontseat passenger can make use of the heated seats. Those seats actually spin around toward the table and back seats for whenever you want to use the campervan as a dining area. Another plus for the drive are the back-up cameras, so even if you aren’t used to driving vehicles as big as these you’ll have some assistance.

Why you should rent: Fit for a family, this new campervan is decked out with modern extras.

  • Sleeps: 4
  • Minimum stay: 3 nights
  • Rates from: $275/night

Another great option for families who want to road trip (including families with pets) is this 2022 Winnebago Dodge Solis. It has two queen-sized beds: one on top and a murphy bed inside. You should feel pretty safe on the road traveling in a van that’s so new, and the inside looks modern too with ample storage and organizational space as well as a bathroom. Have a closer look and you’ll see even more modern touches. For example: The van is equipped with a Kangen water machine, which you can use to make a variety of different electrolyzed waters. It also has a signal booster so you don’t have to say goodbye to your cellphone service if you’re camping somewhere. You’ll have to pack your own bed linens, but the van basically has all the kitchenware you’ll need as well.

With this campervan, it’s possible to get picked up or dropped off at the airport, but you’ll need to request it and pay the extra fee.
